Soundway Records, established in Brighton, remains firmly focused on Nigeria. First there was 'Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife Afro -Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970 - '76' and in that same series the label is now releasing 'Nigeria Disco Funk Special: The Sound Of The Underground Lagos Dancefloor 1974 - '79' and 'Nigeria Rock Special: Psychedelic Afro-Rock And Fuzz Funk In 1970's Nigeria'. We got only got hold of the first compilation, so you'll have to discover the 'Nigeria Rock Special' on your own.

The 'Nigeria Disco Funk Special' offers music from a number of funk-influenced Nigerian bands and artist from the nineteen seventies. Don't expect to recognize any names, because the music of most of these artists can only still be found on obscure albums on the NEMI (Nigerian EMI) or Afrodisias labels. Most of the tracks are still in excellent condition though. Yours truly most enjoyed the songs in Yoruba (Johnny Haastrup's 'Greetings') and Ewondo ('Mota Ginya' by The Voices Of Darkness) simply because they guarantee a slightly more African vibe. Those who still can't get enough of these Nigerian beats should know Soundway deejays also take bookings for a steamy party!
