When back in 1991 and 1992 Toto La Momposina entered the studio with producers Phil Ramone and John Hollis to start working on what eventually would become the 'La Candela Viva' album, she probably never imagined that album would make her into an international star. Looking for some suitable samples for a song by Michel Cleis, John Hollis, meanwhile Toto's son-in-law, recently went in search of the original master tapes of the 'La Candela Viva' sessions. The treasure trove of recordings he encountered (including songs that never saw the light of day) exceeded Hollis' wildest expectations and thus the plan matured to do something with that archive material. The result is 'Tambolero', not just a reissue of 'La Candela Viva', but a reappraisal and reinterpretation of the original. To add that little extra to some of the tracks and create a bridge between past and future, Hollis asked two of Toto's granddaughters, Maria del Mar and Oriana Melissa, to record some additional chorus lines. Excellent reworking and a fine tribute to the diva of Afro-Colombian music!
