A bit of a borderline case this 'Fire Inside' by The Sunvizors, a French five-piece band from Vannes in Brittany, as this is far from a straightforward reggae album. The formation around singer Cindy Dary aka Joy, whose hoarse voice colours the songs on 'Fire Inside', mixes reggae with influences from soul, electro and triphop, a sound that somewhat reminiscent of that of British band City Kay, and resulting in an enjoyable offbeat long player. Some Sunvizors' songs are light-hearted in nature like the summery opener 'Yellow' or in the appropriately titled 'Lightness', the only song on 'Fire Inside' featuring a male voice accompanying Joy (in the form of guest vocalist David Le Deunff, a singer-songwriter of French-Guadeloupian descent), others poetic like 'Around You', but the band also dares to be as socially critical like in 'Radio', about the dominant influence the media exert on our thinking, the anti-war statement 'No One', 'Culture', in which Joy dares to question certain dogmas in the Rastafarian livity, or 'Black Tears', in which the singer shows her fragile side as she tells about her own racist experiences. Strong album, from a band that is not afraid to colour outside the lines.
