Soom T has never made a secret of the fact she's a devout Christian, but with the title of this new opus, 'Born Again', and some of the songs in the track list ('Life Story', 'Stand My Sister', 'Me Away', 'Joy Is Mine'...) she now seems ready to take her faith to a musical level. Musically on 'Born Again' Soom T more or less continues where she left off with 2015s 'Free As A Bird', producing her own blend of reggae, hip-hop, pop and soul. That being said, it was the aforementioned Tom Fire produced album, that was meant to introduce her to a wider audience had to care, that eventually made Soom T decide (at least temporarily) to sever all ties with the music and regain control of her own music again. She retreated to Bristol, where she started collaborating with Farshad Emam, a French radio host she'd met when he interviewed her for his show 'Strong Foundation' (Sensations FM) back in 2013. After the groundwork for the first set of songs was done, in February of last year the pair secluded themselves in Bernex in the French Alps to be able to immerse themselves completely in the music, and for the final recordings the duo took to Fabwize's Wise Studio in Ris Orangis (Île-de-France). Opener 'Bomb Our Yard', also our favorite track on 'Born Again', does exactly what the title promises, featuring a Soom T skanking away over a delightful reggae riddim. Then she goes pop-rock for the infectious 'Some Folk', and the hip-hop vibes of 'Warriors' are accompanied by a great riff on classical guitar. For the aforementioned 'Life Story' Soom T sticks to hip-hop as well and sampled 'Two Guitars', an old Russian Gypsy melody, immortalized in 1857 by composer Ivan Vasiliev (hip-hop heads might also want check 'Close Your Eyes'). Then we get a bit of trip-hop with 'I See You Clear', Amy Winehouse influenced neo-soul with 'Stand My Sister' (see also 'Love To Live'), and finally some more excellent reggae with the up-tempo 'High Aye'. Though far from being a traditional reggae album, with 'Born Again' Soom T once again signs for a highly enjoyable release.
