Even though Palenque La Papayera is a Swiss band from Geneva, their sound is undoubtedly Colombian and immediately reminded yours of Toto La Momposina's repertoire. Wikipedia learns us the term "papayera" dates back to the nineteen fifties, when most (religious) festivities in Barranquilla, the largest city in the Caribbean region of northern Colombia, were still animated by the Banda de Música de la Policía Departamental or the local police orchestra, usually performing in bright green parade uniforms, a color the inhabitants of Barranquilla associated with the papaya tree and the song of the grey saltator, in Colombia called "papayero". These days, the term is used to describe small orchestras using mainly brass and percussion instruments. The genres a papayera performs can vary, but where Palenque La Papayera is concerned they are cumbia, porro, puya (similar to vallenato) and fandango. Fiesta Colombiana super chevere!
