With the re-release of 'Cachaito', World Circuit Records continues on the path they had already chosen with luxury vinyl releases of, among others, Ruben Gonzalez' 'Introducing... Ruben Gonzalez', Ibrahim Ferrer's 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer', and, of course, 'Buena Vista Social Club'. This solo album by Buena Vista Social Club bassist Orlando 'Cachaito' Lopez, the only musician who played on all of Buena Vista's songs, dates back to 2001, even though the "solo" part should be taken too literally as Afro-Cuban All Stars and Buena Vista buddies Miguel 'Anga' Diaz (congas), Amadito Valdés (timbales) and Ibrahim Ferrer (vocals) also collaborated on 'Cachaito'. Add names like surf guitarist Manuel Galban (also a member of Cuban doowop band Los Zafiros), Jamaican keyboardist Bigga Morrison, American funk saxophonist Alfred 'Pee Wee' Ellis, South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela and French hip-hop pioneer DJ Dee Nasty and you end up with an international all-star cast making it difficult to fail. The result is a fascinating album that of course contains hints to Cachaito's work with Buena Vista ('Wahira') and Afro-Cuban All Stars ('Conversacion'), but sounds a lot jazzier, and even doesn't shy away from a dash of hip-hop ('Cachaito In Laboratory') or dub ('Redencion').
