This new album by lovers rock crooner par excellence Mikey Spice immediately reminded yours truly of Ed Robinson's 'On Covers' and that is far from coincidence as just like Robinson, Spice chose to give a number of hits from pop and soul history a reggae makeover. The fact 'I Am I Said' was produced by lovers rock connoisseur Lloyd Campbell, may be considered an extra bonus. 'I Am I Said' opens with 'For The Love Of You', a soul classic immortalized by The Isley Brothers, immediately followed by 'The Power Of Love', originally a stinker of a power ballad by Jennifer Rush, but thanks to Spice's subdued rendition transformed into a rather infectious lovers rock tune. Title track 'I Am I Said' was original done by Neil Diamond, but with songs like 'It Feels Good To Be Loved So Bad' (The Manhattans), 'Your Body Is Here' (The O'Jays), 'I Don't Wanna Lose You' (The Spinners), 'Close The Door' (Teddy Pendergrass), 'With You' (The Moments) and 'Just The Way You Are' (Barry White), 'I Am I Said' feels like a tribute to the golden age of soul. As stated earlier, Spice is a master of the genre and keeps 'I Am I said' from getting corny. Instant lovers rock classic!
