Belgian reggae releases are a rarity. Together with The Skyblasters, Mighty Pirates is one of the longest lasting reggae groups in our little country, but after more than 15 years, 'Give Thanks' is still only their second release. With 19 tracks 'Give Thanks' is good for almost 80 minutes of listening pleasure. With an extended track list like that finding a few redundant tunes ('Poco Mas') on 'Give Thanks' seems almost inevitable, but nevertheless, this album proves a pleasant and sometimes surprising ('Friendship Blues') listening experience, though it is certainly not dance hall material. 'Give Thanks' is jazzy roots reggae with a pinch of world music ('Ulimi Lwami') which is at times reminiscent of the early work of Third World (opener 'Posse'). To be enjoyed with a spliff in the wee hours of the night or on a lazy Sunday morning!
