Since 2014's 'The Skankin' Cat', the Japanese maneki neko (literally translated: "beckoning cat", and considered a protective or good luck charm modeled on the Japanese cat) has been a signboard for French dub duo Mahom. Joris and Toinou have become a regular fixture in the French dub scene and with this new album crown themselves 'King Cat' (a big nod to 'King Kong', see album cover, included). In the track list songs ranging from ambient dubscapes like opener 'Cosmic Cat' or 'Planète' (in which we recognized samples from Manu Chao's 'Infinita Tristeza'), to heavier techno-like tracks like 'Blue Hole' or 'Disappear'. Our favorites from the track list are two vocal cuts: 'Le Temps De L'Amour', a dubby reinterpretation of the classic from French chanson by Françoise Hardy for which Mahom collaborated with Luiza, a French-Brazilian singer from Lyon also active in world-dub project OYA, and 'Digital Badness', a song over a Nintendo-like digital riddim for which they invited Tours based MC Green Cross aka The Mic Alchemist. Excellent French ambient-digi-dub production!
