The award for the most apt band name of 2012 has to go to Los Transatlanticos, a band of which part of its members have their home in Bogota, Colombia and others operate from Berlin. Thanks to the wonders of modern communication and the ease with which audio files can be exchanged, the large distance no longer forms a barrier. The band name also perfectly describes the music of Los Transatlanticos. Pablo Gaviria and his brother Alvaro provide the exotic vibes and Dean Bagar takes care of the beats and electronic effects. The fifteen tracks on 'First Trip' offer a variation of genres, often in original mixes. 'First Trip' opens with the dubby 'Moving Up' with Freddy Livingston and Doggy Fresh providing a Jamaican touch. 'Tierra Y Sol' featuring Liana, Gran Mancilla and Lucia Vargas is a Latin version of the dubstep genre. Doggy Fresh also appears on 'Desde Colombia', a hip-hop tune reminiscent of the work of the equally Colombian Choq Quib Town and 'Alone I Am', performed by Benjamin Banjam, offers more hip-hop but this time with a jazzy touch. Not all tracks on 'First Trip' are equally convincing, but this is most definitely an album many DJ's will gladly select from.
