The term "hijaz" refers to a scale from Arabic music, but as a band name it's also a nod to jazz. Musically speaking, this quartet (Chryster Aerts - percussion, Rui Salgado - double bass, Niko Deman - piano and Moufadhel Adhoum - oud) focusses on the dialogue between oud and piano. The title of their third album, 'Nahadin', also refers to an Arabic music scale or maqam. Apart from one track - 'Hawa' for which Tunisian singer Abir Nasraoui reinterprets a poem by Arabo-Andalusian philosopher Ibn Arabi - 'Nahadin' is an entirely instrumental album that occasionally reminded yours truly of Maurice El Médioni's piano orientale sound.
