To be honest, the name Estelle didn't ring any bells with yours truly, but in the r&b scene, the British singer of Senegalese-Grenadian descent has been a familiar face since 2008's 'Shine' was released on John Legend's Homeschool label and she then went on to win a Grammy for world hit 'American Boy', a duet with Kanye West. That album also featured 'Come Over', a combination with Sean Paul, and since then some of Estelle's fans have been pushing for a full-fledged reggae album. With 'Lovers Rock' the singer finally seems to be catering to her fans' wishes. The title of the album doesn't quite match the whole vibe of the record though, as the track list of 'Lovers Rock' is made up of an enjoyful mix of lovers rock, reggae, dancehall and r&b. For the album Estelle joined forces with producers like Supa Dups, Reefa, Jerry Wonda and Harmony Samuel, and in the track list you can find combinations with diverse voices from established names like Maleek Berry, Chronixx, Konshens, Kranium and new talent like HoodCelebrityy, Alicia Harley and Nick & Navi (the first a young dancehall revelation from Saint Catherine in Jamaica, Harley a female rapper from South London, and the latter dancehall/r&b singer-songwriter twins from Chicago). Most of all, 'Lovers Rock' evoked memories of Lauryn Hill's iconic 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill' ('Lights Out', 'One More Time', 'Queen' featuring Chronixx). This also makes it one of those albums you should only listen to in its entirety, but we'd still like to present you with some of our personal favorites from the track list. The album opens with 'So Easy', lovers rock meets hip-hop and a combination with New Orleans based r&b talent Luke James, a catchier tune than 'Love Like Ours', a duet with Tarrus Riley, you won't find on 'Lovers Rock', the Harmony Samuels produced bass tune 'Better' also hits the spot, not immediately our cup of tea but an earworm that could potentially make it into the international charts is 'Ain't You Bitch', upbeat tropical beats by Kadis, and finally the dubby 'Karma' featuring HoodCelebrityy. As far as we're concerned, Estelle can already start preparing for the next Grammy ceremony!
