Even though yours truly tries to cover the most diverse genres from the five continents, there are some that get significantly less attention than others. On the one hand that has to do with time limitations, but in all honesty it's also a matter of personal taste. Take Portuguese fado for example; even though musically it can at times be of an almost superhuman beauty, yours truly struggles with the saudade, the feeling of melancholy, which defines this music. Deoalinda, a project around singer Ana Bacalhau and guitarist/composer Pedro da Silva Martins, infuses the genre with a fresh wind. On their debut album, 'Canção Ao Lado', with an innovative blend of traditional (the vocals of singer Ana Bacalhau) and new elements (the instruments used by Luis José Martins, ranging from the ukulele and cavaco to the guitalele and viola braguese) they lift the fado genre to the 21st century. In their homeland Portugal this album already went double platinum! Refreshing!
