Chouk Bwa Libète (literally "trunk of the tree of freedom", a reference to a quote by general and leader of the Haitian revolution Toussaint Louverture: "By toppling me they only knocked down the trunk of the tree of freedom of black people; it will grow again from its roots, for they are deep and numerous.") is a traditional ensemble from Gonaives in Haiti specializing in so-called "mizik rasin", a genre that emerged in the 1970s, when Haitian musicians harked back to the roots of voodoo culture. 'Se Nou Ki La!' is more musical ethnography than swinging world music, because more than a few voices, drums and the occasional lanbi (conch shells which were used to call Haiti's slaves to arms) you won't hear on this album. That being said, for those willing to take the time - apart from the lyrics to the songs on the album, the detailed liner notes also offer a huge amount of additional information and quotes from 'Bain De Lune', an award-winning novel by Haitian author Yanick Lahens - to learn more about Haitian voodoo culture with its numerous lwa's, loa's or spirits, this album is a real treasure trove.
