Just as they did with 'Ghost Radio', actually an inbetweener-LP meant to bridge the time between the release of 'Abyssinia Afterlife' and 'Artifacts', in anticipation of a new album the members of Black Flower are this time presenting this four track 'Intermediate State' EP. The inspiration for the EP came from Spanish surrealist and eccentric Salvador Dali, who used to sit back in a chair with a pair of scissors in his hand, closed his eyes and slid into sleep. The moment his body and mind entered deep sleep, the scissors dropped and waked him up. Dali then started painting using the inspiration he gathered from his dreams. With opener 'Almaz', Black Flower for the first time opted for a cover version of an existing Ethiopian classic made popular by Mahmoud Ahmed. 'Tizita Saba Maqam' is a successful experiment trying to blend Ethiopian blues or tizita with the Arab saba maqam or musical scale. Black Flower recently collaborated with Bruges based composer Dijf Sanders for his Indonesian-inspired 'Java' album, and in 'Good Side Or Bad' (psychedelic) echoes from that cooperation can still be heard. Just before the scissors fell back on the ground there's still 'Fly High Oh My' concluding the EP in energetic ecstasy. With 'Intermediate State' Black Flower serves yet another most excellent "inbetweener"!
