Bajka are a gang of gadje (Romani term for someone who is not of Roma or Sinti descent) from Mayenne - a department in the northwest of France - who for their repertoire draw both on the Gypsy traditions of Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria and Jewish klezmer ('Krivo Horo'). Although the presence of a sousaphone and trumpet might suggest a Balkan brass band, the rest of the instruments (clarinet, accordion) used in the band are more in line with the Romanian taraf tradition. The same duality is audible in vibe of the songs on 'Zaïedno' ("together") which are one moment energetic and festive ('Tchavela', 'Delchevsko', 'Moujik Oro'), and subdued and melancholic the next ('Sat', 'Muro Rom', 'Deb'hora'). But wither they are a taraf or a brass band, the thing you need to remember about Bajka is that this band is a definite a must for all those favorably disposed to the Balkan-genre!
