Those who caught Jan Leyers' passage through the Romani ghetto of Krakow ('De Weg Naar Het Avondland', Episode 10, CANVAS/VPRO) know Romani people are quite fond of our little country and it would far from amaze us if the musical reputation of Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra had something to do with that. With 'I Lumia Mo Kher' ("the world is my home") the Antwerp brass band delivers a successor to their 2007 debut 'Tuttilegal', but this small masterpiece immediately makes that first effort look like a novice's experiment. Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra has clearly matured, proven by the fact they now command enough respect in the Romani-community to be able to persuade Gypsy veterans like Kocani Orkestar or Marko Markovic to lend a hand. Front man Gregor Engelen expresses himself alternately in English ('No Disco Boy', a response to Shantel's 'Disko Boy'), French ('A La Truko', a collaboration with MC Sebo and a nod to the work of Gipsy.cz) and Antwerp dialect ('Te Laat'), but we still prefer his songs in Romani (no mean feat for someone who's not of Romani descent). Although the genre continues to evolve rapidly, with their mix of Gypsy music, ska and reggae, Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra is still a bit of a unique phenomenon in the Balkan scene. Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra's sound isn't as innovative anymore as it was a few years back, but their recipe does work. Bordercrossing Belgian masterpiece!
