The award for the most original band name this month goes to the Norwegian girls quartet Katzenjammer (German for "cat's wail"). With a whole arsenal of instruments ranging from a small ukulele or mandolin to Turid Jørgensen's imposing cat decorated double bass balalaika and in between a series of strange instruments listening to names like harpeleik (chorded zither), domra (Russian type of lute) and Mellotron, the foursome produces an extremely catchy mix of folk, Gypsy music, bluegrass, cabaret and, as the album title suggests, pop. The Norwegian answer to Laïs? The folk version of the Dixie Chicks? Katzenjammer seems to be the perfect entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, but these kittens have just that bit more going for them.
