The recent flow of reggae releases from the United States seems to be never ending. This self-titled debut album by Tatanka, a four man band from Denver, Colorado, was once again produced by E. N. Young and is distributed on his Roots Musician Records label. Anyone who's ever seen the western epic 'Dances With Wolves' knows "tatanka" is Lakota for "Bison" and it's exactly that animal which is depicted on the cover of 'Tatanka'. The voice of singer/guitarist Ian Gastl (aka Champian) might sound somewhat poppy to/for reggae lovers (and reminded yours truly somewhat of that of Rebelution's Eric Rachmany), but Tatanka's sound is quite dubby. With a song like 'Show Me Love', a version over the Sleng Teng riddim, and a collaboration with reggae veteran Triston Palmer ('Give Green'), the band proves they do know their Jamaican classics.
