With Sceptre's 'Essence Of Redemption Ina Dif'rent Styley' by Sceptre, Reggae Archive Records saves another UK reggae gem from oblivion. 'Essence Of Redemption Ina Dif'rent Styley' was the only album this Birmingham based band, counting three siblings in its ranks (Jean 'Jeanus' McLean on guitar, Beverly 'Ranking Bev' McLean on keyboard and Blacka Lenny on bass) almost resembling a family orchestra, recorded between 1981 and 1987 and because of limited distribution soon became a true collector's item for vinyl lovers. Even though this is an excellent album from start to finish, including a mix of roots and lovers rock tracks, it's especially opener 'Ina Dif'rent Styley' with its Althea & Donna-like vibe that towers above the rest of the songs on 'Essence Of Redemption Ina Dif'rent Styley'. The fact Sceptre constantly alternated between male and female voices for the lead vocals of their songs, always gives this album that little extra it needs. Obscure gem!
