Has it really been since 1977's 'Love Crisis' (or 'Black Sounds Of Freedom' if you prefer the European release) that Michael Rose/Mykal Rose last collaborated with Lloyd 'King Jammy' James? In any case, it made us all the more curious about 'Rasta State'! King Jammy gave Rose a pick of his productions - we recognized among others Baba Boom ('Judgement'), None A Jah Jah Children ('Unity'), Run Down The World ('Israelites'), Sara ('Free Education') and Answer ('Anything You Want Girl') - and the result is undoubtedly one of the best Michael Rose albums of recent years! With 'Peace And Love In The Ghetto' Rose recorded a not unpleasant, albeit somewhat unnecessary, new version of the Black Uhuru-classic 'Willow Tree', but we were most taken with the very catchy 'Hail H.I.M.', a version over the Ali Baba riddim. If you want to hear Mykal Rose in full swing again, be sure to purchase 'Rasta State'!
